Polyvagal Theory in the Therapy Room

A Clinician's Approach to Working with Nervous System States

Course Begins February 16, 2027

Learn How to Shift the Underlying Physiology of Your Clients

Polyvagal Theory is a framework that helps therapists understand how the autonomic nervous system shapes emotional regulation, trauma responses, and client behavior. For clinicians working with trauma, anxiety, or dysregulation, learning how to apply a Polyvagal Lens in therapy can transform both assessment and intervention strategies.

This Polyvagal Theory course for therapists provides practical tools to help you recognize nervous system states, support client safety, and guide regulation in session. You’ll learn how to integrate polyvagal principles that help you shift clients' underlying physiological states to create meaningful beahvioral, emotional, and relational changes.

Student Reviews

Lyndsey Dunbar

I found this course so informative. It has really assisted me in integrating the polyvagal theory into my clinical practice. Ruby jo was fantastic at delivering the material and the in class demonstration where very helpful.

Nicole Barksdale

I really enjoyed Clinical Applications of Polyvagal Theory for Therapists because it gave me practical tools I could use right away. Nothing felt overly theoretical or abstract. I found myself thinking about sessions differently as I was watching, and then actually doing things differently with clients.

Michelle Trosclair

I am so grateful for the professional growth I have experienced during my association with Ruby Jo and the investment she has made in me as a fellow human. Her life experience resonates with her ability to be direct yet compassionate and her loving sense of humor. Trainings are filled with laughter, reflection, and aha moments.

Karin Lee Hughes

Through Ruby Jo’s training, I learned a wonderful synthesis of somatic work and polyvagal theory-based neurobiology. I use the skills throughout my day personally and extensively with my clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

This class will use the lens of Polyvagal Theory in applying therapeutic processes for physiological shifts, resulting in behavioral, emotional, and relational changes. These changes are directly related to clients’ needs and are at the heart of therapy.

What is Polyvagal Theory?

What is this course about?

This course is a cutting-edge approach to working more effectively in therapy. Diagnosis and presenting symptoms from clients always have an underlying physiological state. Polyvagal Theory provides the framework and understanding of supporting clients’ current presentation, as well as supporting them in their goals for treatment.

This class will use the lens of Polyvagal Theory in applying therapeutic processes for physiological shifts, resulting in behavioral, emotional, and relational changes. These changes are directly related to clients’ needs and are at the heart of therapy. This class can be applied to a developed therapeutic approach for seasoned practitioners, or it can stand alone for newer clinicians wanting to apply Polyvagal Theory to their psychotherapeutic practice.

How is this course different from other trainings?

This training goes beyond learning to manage nervous system states. Instead of focusing only on state management, it teaches therapists how to help the nervous system move toward completion and lasting change. Students learn how to work with the underlying physiology driving dysregulation and support deeper, more integrated healing.

Who is this course for?

This training is for psychotherapists who want to utilize polyvagal-informed interventions in therapy.

Does this course offer a certificate?

Yes. You will receive a Concentration in the Clinical Application of Polyvagal Theory certificate upon completion of the course.

Is this course suitable for new and experienced therapists?

Yes. This training is designed for both newer practitioners and experienced clinicians. Whether you are just learning somatic approaches or already have advanced tools, you’ll learn how to apply this work effectively in your practice.

What are the guiding principles of this course?

To support a greater sense of safety and to deepen your learning, we will be emphasizing engagement through practice and participation. Learning tends to integrate more fully when we have opportunities to practice, and confidence often grows from having direct experience with the material. Our hope is that you leave this training feeling both capable and grounded in your relationship with this work.

With that in mind, we warmly encourage full participation in all practices and small groups. These experiences are designed to support both your individual learning and the collective learning of the group, helping you walk away with the skills you came here to develop.

Small groups, in particular, offer a valuable space for reflection and meaning-making. They support the kind of self-reflection that informs thoughtful, effective treatment, while also inviting the parallel process of moving toward your Essence—an important aspect of PVT-informed therapy.

There may be moments when participating in a practice feels like too much—similar to a day when, if you were seeing clients, you might choose to reschedule sessions. If this happens during the course, we ask that you complete a written reflection on the practice within three weeks of the session. The practice can be completed with another participant in the training or with another appropriate person. This helps ensure continued engagement with the skills while honoring your capacity.

Even on days when you decide not to actively practice, we ask that you remain present for small groups. Observing others and learning through the group process is a meaningful way to deepen your understanding of how to work effectively with the autonomic nervous system.

To further support you, we will be teaching skills that help you find a reliable “foothold in green,” supporting regulation, safety, and fuller participation throughout the training.

We also ask that cameras remain on and that you join from a private space whenever possible. This helps us approximate the felt sense of being together and supports connection and safety within the group. In our clinical work, we stay present and open with our clients—our “camera is on.” If you need to step away briefly, please let us know in the class Zoom chat.

“In the field of trauma therapy, we are witnessing a shift from models of correction, to models of connection. Ruby Jo’s work is a part of this evolution. It invites clinicians to move beyond pathology, into presence, beyond fixing, into witnessing, and beyond reactivity, into regulation. It honors the wisdom of the body and the healing power of relationships.”
