The Polyvagal Certificate Course

Safety, Connection & the Nervous System

Next Cohort Begins October 13, 2026

Transform Your Personal & Professional Relationships Through a Deeper Understanding of the Nervous System

Your nervous system is like a personal guard, working 24/7 to protect you. Polyvagal Theory gives you the concepts, language, and science to understand how the nervous system's natural fluctuations are reflected in our behavior and emotions.  The PVI Polyvagal Certificate Course will help you use that knowledge to create greater safety, connection, and compassion in your life, whether at work or at home.

Led by Dr. Stephen Porges and our team of experts, you’ll go deep into the autonomic nervous system, the vagus nerve, and the core concepts of Polyvagal Theory, including neuroception, co-regulation, and the body's innate drive toward healing. With a foundational understanding in place, you’ll be able to begin applying a polyvagal lens where it matters most.

  • 30+ hours of live classes, small group discussions & materials
  • Ongoing invitation for future live Q&As with Dr. Porges
  • Access to recordings and materials for one year

Module 1 | Our Autonomic Nervous System

This module taught by Mel Pohl, MD, focuses on defining the organization and function of the Autonomic Nervous System, exploring its hierarchical structure and how it responds in relationship to felt safety. This module provides a foundational perspective for applying Polyvagal Theory in practice, with three interventions that build awareness and support shifting the body into physiological states with more access to safety.

Tuesday, October 20, 2026

Module 2 | Hierarchy: Our Neurophysiological States

In this module, Michael Allison guides participants through an exploration of the adaptive, reflexive response hierarchy to safety and threat, highlighted through visual examples. Students will begin to relate to bodily reactions, rewrite the stories we attach to those feelings, and cultivate strategies, resources and relationships that help to realign our physiology to support intentions, values and well-being.

Tuesday, November 3, 2026

Pod Discussion #1

You'll discuss the material presented in Modules 1 & 2 in your small group moderated by your Pod Leader

Module 3 | Neuroception: Surveilling Safety and Detecting Threat

In this module, Tracy Stackhouse, OT, MA, defines neuroception as the nervous system’s subconscious surveillance system that constantly scans internal sensations, social cues, and environmental signals as safe or threatening, driving rapid shifts in autonomic state. These automatic shifts shape our decision‑making, coping, relationships and overall well‑being. This module explores how understanding these subconscious processes can provide us with knowledge and tools to begin to intentionally create new conditions that support the retuning of the nervous system.

Tuesday, November 24, 2026

Module 4 | Interoception: Listening to Your Body

In this module, Jan Winhall, MSW walks students through cultivating interoception, the conscious awareness of internal bodily sensations. Students will examine how interoception and neuroception differ, and how our survival responses impact one’s ability to feel into the body. Students will apply focusing as an interoceptive practice.

Tuesday, December 8, 2026

Pod Discussion #2

You'll discuss the material presented in Modules 3 & 4 in your small group moderated by your Pod Leader

Module 5 | Co-regulation and Safety in Connection: Biological, Cultural and Societal Implications

In this module, Niloufer Merchant, EdD shows how co‑regulation operates as a ventral‑vagal mechanism that synchronizes another’s nervous system to create a felt sense of safety and belonging, tracing the evolutionary, cultural, and societal roots of this process. It also examines power dynamics and cultural safety, illustrating how intentional co‑regulation can foster community care and catalyze broader social change.

Tuesday, January 5, 2027

Module 6 | Polyvagal Theory, Movement, and Regulation: An Embodied Approach to Trauma Recovery

In this module, Arielle Schwartz, PhD examines trauma from a polyvagal perspective. Students engage with practical psychobiological regulation interventions to cultivate flexibility between nervous system states and foster embodied pathways to support trauma recovery.

Tuesday, January 26, 2027

Pod Discussion #3

Your third discussion with your pod will take place in between Module 6 and 7. You'll discuss the material presented in Modules 5-6 in your small group moderated by your Pod Leader

Module 7 | Community as Medicine

In Niki Elliott, PhD’s module, you’ll examine the impact of social exclusion, isolation, and marginalization on the nervous system, and explore ways that a sense of belonging and radical welcome activate the vagus‑mediated healing power of community. The lesson builds a practical path to creating inclusive, co‑regulating environments.

Tuesday, February 16, 2027

Module 8 | Polyvagal Theory and Human Relationships

In this module, George Thompson, MD explores the foundational role of polyvagal principles in one-on-one and group interactions, offering insights and practical tools for cultivating compassionate, trustworthy relationships in both personal and professional settings.

Tuesday, March 2, 2027

Module 9 | Engaging with the Art of Inquiry and Practice

In this module, Amber Gray, PhD invites participants to deeply explore and embody Polyvagal Theory through reflective inquiry and practical, embodied exercises. Emphasizing the importance of ongoing practice and self-discovery, Amber guides learners to befriend their nervous systems and integrate polyvagal principles into their lives with curiosity and ease.

Tuesday, March 16, 2027

Pod Discussion #4

You'll discuss the material presented in Modules 7-9 in your small group moderated by your Pod Leader

Live Discussion with Dr. Porges

Attend a one-hour live discussion with Dr. Stephen Porges, the creator of Polyvagal Theory. Submit questions for him to answer that are relevant to your line of work or focus. We do our best to address as many questions as possible during this hour.

Learning Objectives

Understand the Science

Your nervous system is always working in the background to keep you safe. In this course, you’ll learn how that system operates and the 3+ states it moves between: calm and connected, mobilized and activated, or shut down and withdrawn. You'll see why the vagus nerve sits at the center of it all, and you'll learn that your body can only rest, heal, and connect with others when it isn't busy defending you. By the end you'll be able to spot which state you're in and use simple, practical tools to shift toward feelings of safety.

Apply a Polyvagal Lens

Leave with practical tools to foster more co-regulation in your relationships. You'll learn how the face, voice, and our capacity to listen integrate as a social engagement system. You'll also look at trauma through a polyvagal lens and learn concrete approaches, including specific vagus nerve exercises, to help yourself and others move from survival back toward safety and connection, where healing can happen.

Live a Polyvagal-Informed Life

Long before you consciously note how you’re feeling, your body is constantly scanning for cues of safety or danger – a process called neuroception. That silent scanning quietly shapes your choices, your moods, and your relationships, often without you realizing it. You'll also learn about the signals coming from inside your body, called interoception. Through various practices, you'll learn to tune in to those external and internal signals, and use that information to ground yourself in the present moment without shame or judgement.
