Two Nervous Systems, One Connection

Horses read the body in front of them and respond to it in real time. This course walks you through what that exchange looks like in practice, and how the space between horse and human becomes the actual site of the work.

This course is intended to support all Polyvagal-Informed practitioners in their personal and professional development. These sessions are not just for horse professionals or those with horses.

Course Framework

Module 1: Introduction to Equine-Assisted Interventions Using Polyvagal Principles

  • This class will introduce you to the amazing world of horses and how Polyvagal principles can be applied in your professional or personal practice. Your host, Dr Rebecca Bailey will guide you through this video as you expand your awareness of your own autonomic processing through interacting with equines and how you can enhance your professional presence with clients with humor and creative communication.

Module 2: Introduction to Applications of Equine Polyvagal Principles to Various Populations

  • Meet Margie McDonald, equine specialist, Jaycee Dugard, trauma survivor and advocate, Dr. Rebecca Bailey and Dr. Frank Davis as they show us how working with various populations can be reached when you apply Polyvagal principles and horses. Through mutual interaction, you will increase awareness of the importance of compassionate connections.

Module 3: Introduction to Horse Behaviors and Their Meanings

  • Discover the many ways that horses “talk” to us. Through a Polyvagal lens, we explore horse body language and how they express their thoughts and needs.   The subtle and not-so-subtle nonverbal communication styles of equines can serve to remind humans to slow down and pay attention to nonverbal messages.

Module 4: Beyond the Couch: How Horses Help Humans Through Trauma and Treatment

  • Join Dr. Rebecca Bailey, Margie McDonald and Jaycee Dugard as they explore a day in the arena. What is a typical day like? How can Polyvagal equine inventions be a catalyst for conversation and connection? Even if you don’t have access to horses, lessons learned from Polyvagal equine interventions can be applied to treating trauma survivors.

Module 5: Live Discussion with Course Instructors
