What You'll Learn

Navigate the Nervous System

Watch Client Demo

Watch Dr. Porges and Deb Dana analyze a recorded demo with a workshop volunteer. Witness exactly how Dana negotiates physical distance, plays the vagal brake, and guides an "autonomic journey" down into sympathetic and dorsal states and back towards ventral.

Apply Polyvagal Theory in your Practice

Across the first two modules, Deb Dana lays out her complete clinical framework for working with the nervous system.

Dr. Levine & Dr. Porges Discussion

Learn how ow Somatic Experiencing and Polyvagal Theory actually intersect, in Porges and Levine's own words: titration, pendulation, and the case for trauma as self-defined rather than event-defined.

Curriculum

Module 01 — Foundations of Polyvagal Theory (Deb Dana  ~50 min)

Deb Dana introduces the first two organizing principles of Polyvagal Theory — neuroception and the autonomic hierarchy — including the vagal brake and the ladder as her clinical translation of ventral, sympathetic, and dorsal states.

Module 02 — Mapping the Nervous System (Deb Dana  ~57 min)

Deb Dana transitions into applying these concepts: building a personal profile map with clients, the "notice and name" skill, the blended states of play, freeze, and stillness, ventral vagal anchors, and the third organizing principle: co-regulation, taught through the social engagement system.

Module 03 — Case Study: Watching the Work (Dr. Stephen Porges & Deb Dana  ~65 min)

Stephen Porges and Deb Dana review a real recorded demonstration session, segment by segment, with a workshop volunteer named struggling with anxiety.

Module 04 — Two Pioneers in Dialogue (Dr. Stephen Porges & Dr. Peter Levine, moderated by Dr. Chris Walling  ~58 min)

Dr. Porges and Dr. Levine trace their 50-year history and connect Polyvagal Theory directly to Somatic Experiencing's core tools — titration, pendulation, and co-regulation — before closing on where they hope trauma therapy goes next.

Watching Deb work with a volunteer for a demo is so helpful not only because she is a master at this work but because the viewer gets to hear from both her and Stephen what they believe has happened in the demo at regular intervals. This reinforces the learning beautifully.

This course included dialogue recordings of Dr. Porges with Somatic Experiencing founder Peter Levine, Deb Dana, and many practitioners in a training/chat format. The 10 downloadable pdfs on theory and practical application is testimony to the desire of PVI and individuals within the organization to share the information widely and thoughtfully in the context of training. Thank you!
